“Still nothing?” I asked Jericho when he walked into my room.

“Nope. He doesn’t even read them. All go straight to the trash.”

“Dammit.” Jericho had been God send. He’d been my eyes and ears. He reported back and told me everything going on with Veto. At first, I couldn’t get him to tell me anything, now he didn’t hold back the information. I couldn’t believe Veto was back to his old ways and selling more women than he did before. Jericho said everything changed when number 7, as Jericho referred to her, assaulted Veto and tried to escape. From the sound of everything, my son fell for this girl and, when she did what she did, he became worse. I was even horrified by some of the stories he told me about. Jericho said Veto was way ruthless. He went as far as bringing me pictures to prove his claims. The pictures of these women cuffed to beds and stripped down to nothing crushed me. He even showed videos of the workers molesting them. It truly broke my heart to see that. I was angry with Veto. Those girls were somebody’s daughters or maybe even some were mothers. They didn’t deserve that.

Since Veto hadn’t been in here to see me lately, I tried reaching out by letters. I’d write him something and have Jericho take it to him. I just learned that was of no use because Veto’s been trashing them all. If I could just leave my room to go and talk to him, I would. That wasn’t possible either since the door locked from the outside.

“What to do now?” I sat at the edge of the bed, lost in my thoughts.

“I can help you.”

“Help me how?” I jumped up all too excited. For some reason, I felt if I could just get my son to listen… see me for who I was to him—his mother. Then, maybe I could talk some sense into him. Talking was my only defense. It was sad, but I didn’t even know who this person was anymore. The stuff he was doing wasn’t even exposed to him.

“I can leave the door unlocked. You’ll probably need this, just in case another guard catches you out.” He handed me over a gun.

“You mean to tell me, they will shoot his own mother?”

“There’s no telling. They’ll see it as escaping more and likely.”

“This is too much.” I was baffled… shoot me? What the hell did I do so bad to that damn boy? Other than respond like most mothers did when their young men were fucking up. We threaten them and maybe talk a little shit because we’re hurt. We want to see them do better. Regardless, we still be there for our kids even when we’re mad. Look what being a concerned mother had gotten me. I wasn’t sure what I was attempting to do would work, but I was going to at least try.

“Listen. If you do get caught out—”

“Jericho, relax. If it came down to it, I would take full blame.
